"Catholic Girl (First Edition)" is a collection of works by American female photographer Andrea Modica. Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1960, she studied at a local state university and earned an MFA from the prestigious Yale University. Influenced by masters such as August Sanger and Diane Arbus, Modica became a leading figure in 8x10 portraiture, leaving behind numerous portraits. Her most famous work is "Treadwell," a documentary that followed Barbara, a girl who later died of childhood diabetes, and her family for many years. Barbara's later years were later published as a solo photobook by Nazraeli. This book is a collection of portraits taken at her alma mater, an Italian-American Catholic girls' school, and at a Catholic girls' school in New Haven, Connecticut. The book beautifully depicts the fluctuating emotions of teenagers, and is filled with the artist's wish that they not focus on getting good grades at school, but rather on experiencing joy and sorrow, and wholeheartedly pursuing what they are passionate about. Limited edition of 1000 copies. First edition 2023. (A second edition without a case will also be published in 2025.)
